For the second year in a row, Alex Fernandez (4-4, 4.13 ERA) will finish the season on the Disabled List. Fernandez’s right shoulder continues to experience inflamation and chronic pain and might need further surgery. Fernandez began throwing last week, but the shoulder was still sore. Insurance will pay $5 million of his $7 million dollar salary. There is still one year left on his 5-year contract. Should Fernandez undergoe another operation, he might miss the entire 2001 season. During the 1997 NLCS, Fernandez blew out the rotator cuff. He missed the entire 1998 season and was shut down last august. He last pithced on May 18, 2000.
