Floyd, CJ Head to All-Star Game

After a week of controversy, Cliff Floyd joined Charles Johnson as a National League All-Star. Floyd replaces Mets pitcher Rick Reed.

The Marlins reached the All Star break with a 43-45 record following a 6-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Ryan Dempster held Tampa to 1 run on 4 hits, earning his 10th win of the season. The Marlins are now 7.5 games behind the NL East leading Phillies. The win came after a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay. Brad Penny, who took the loss, strained a muscle in his left rib cage. Penny may go on the disabled list and will not be ready to pitch for 2 to 3 weeks.

Marlins Acquire Acevedo; Wilson Rehabs in AAA

The Marlins acquired right-handed reliever Juan Acevedo from the Colorado for AAA infielder Josue Espada. The 31 year old Acevedo was 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in 38 appearances with the Rockies. The Mexican born Acevedo will provide much needed veteran relief in the bullpen and will likely be the right-handed setup man for Antonio Alfonseca. Gary Knotts was sent down to AAA to make room for Acevedo. After declaring himself pain-free, Preston Wilson joined AAA Calgary in New Orleans for a series against the local Zephyrs. Wilson has been out since June 30 due to an injury in his left thumb and the tragic death of his son. He is expected back in Florida by the end of the week.
