Looks like Nats didn’t want Ryan Tucker for Nick Johnson, not sure why so probably no trades for the Fish. #mlbtrades
Joe Frisaro says no trades today #mlbtrades #mlbtrades
If Marlins get Nick Johnson, will Cantu be a defensive downgrade at 3rd? #mlbtrades #mlbtrades
The Marlins have acquired 1B Nick Johnson from the Washington Nationals for minor league pitcher Aaron Thompson. Despite earlier rumors that the deal was dead after the Nats rejected Ryan Tucker, it’s amazing that the Fish were able to close the deal for only Thompson. This is bad news for Emilio Bonifacio who will likely move into a utility role while Jorge Cantu returns to 3B.
Update: Beinfest and Hill clearly out maneuvered the Nats. Not only did they complete the trade for a lesser prospect, they also convinced the Nats to cover Johnson’s remaining $1.8 million salary.
The Marlins called up Gaby Sanchez to take up Andrew Miller‘s roster spot. This could mean bad news for Emilio Bonifacio or Dan Uggla or it could just be nothing more than a call-up.
In a somewhat unexpected move, the Marlins sent Andrew Miller to AAA after a terrible outing against the Phillies. Miller showed no control of his pitches and at times his velocity was in the low 80s. Rick VandenHurk, who pitched 6 good innings last night against the Padres, will assume Miller‘s spot in the rotation. With 12 pitchers already on the roster, the Marlins are likely to call up a position player.
Rick VandenHurk was called up to start tonight’s game in San Diego. To make room, Andy Gonzalez was sent back to AAA.
Sean West was sent down to AA after another bad outing. Despite showing signs of great potential, West struggled often and was never able to establish a second successful pitch. The Fish will likely bring up a reliever as they don’t need a 5th starter for another week or so.
Update: Veteran reliever Luis Ayala was called up.
Kiko Calero is back from the DL. Tim Wood is heading back to AAA and Alfredo Amezaga was transferred to 60-day DL meaning his season is over.
He’s not going on the DL but he’s about to miss his 4th straight game and the Marlins have called up Andy Gonzalez.
Here’s one photo from last night’s loss to the Giants. Will try to post more tonight.
Hanley Ramirez was voted the starting shortstop and Josh Johnson was named a reserve to the 2009 National League All-Star team. Hanley will make his second consecutive start at the All-Star Game while Josh earned his first appearance.
The Marlins have signed veteran reliever Brendan Donnelly and he should be available to pitch today. Donnelly recently opted out of his minor league deal with the Astros. The 38-year old has two world series rings (Angels 2002 and Boston 2007). To make room for Donnelly, Chris Leroux was put on the DL.
Phillies lose — Marlins tied for first place in the NL East.
