Not sure anyone saw this one coming but the Marlins have called up Jose Fernandez to take the 5th spot in the pitching rotation.
As the Marlins announced their opening day roster, the last name announced was none other than super prospect Jose Fernandez. With both Nathan Eovaldi and Henderson Alvarez unexpectedly going on the DL, the Marlins needed two starters and the Marlins chose Fernandez and Alex Sanabia to take those spots. While the Fernandez move is exciting for Marlins fans and the future of the franchise, one must worry whether this was the right move. Fernandez has only pitched as high as A-ball and was slated to join AA this year, a more natural progression for even the best of prospects. Also, with days off, the Marlins will skip the 5th spot during the first week so in reality the Marlins may only need a couple starts from that spot. Calling up Fernandez not only risks his development but starts his Major LEague service clock, making him potentially eligible for arbitration sooner.
Regardless, watching Fernandez pitch and hopefully develop into a star pitcher provides something to look forward to in what may likely be a long and challenging season for the Marlins.
