• Marlins Acquire Penn and Gload

  • Robert Andino, who was out of options, to the Baltimore Orioles for right-handed reliever Hayden Penn. Penn hasn’t had a stellar career:

Penn reached the big leagues with the Orioles in 2005, and he’s appeared in seven Grapefruit League games this spring. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 10.06 ERA in 17 innings.

The 24-year-old Penn was 0-4 with a 15.10 ERA in six starts last year, logging 19 2/3 innings.

Additionally, the Fish found a left-handed hitter to come off the bench. The Marlins acquired 33-year old Ross Gload and cash from the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named later.

  • Fish Trade for Arthur Rhodes

  • The good news it that the Marlins just strengthened their bullpen by acquiring Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners. The terrible news is that they gave up Gaby Hernandez. More details to follow. More

    • I don’t think this is a bad deal. At 21, Gaby has yet to show the talent everybody was looking for. His record this year hasn’t been that great (5-8 this season with a 6.47 ERA in 17 starts for Triple-A Albuquerque and Double-A Carolina). As the Marlins pitching depth has increased, it may just be that Gaby’s star has dimmed a little.

  • Welcome Jacque Jones

  • Jacque Jones is now officially a member of the Florida Marlins. 11 months ago we tried to get him from the Cubs but a last minute veto from Cubs ownership killed the deal.

Jones signed a minor league deal and will report to Jupiter to get some at bats before joining the big team. Brett Carroll will probably be sent down to the minors where he can improve by playing every day (rather than riding the bench in the majors). All-in-all, Jones comes at little to no cost or risk. He gives Fredi Gonzalez another left-handed bat and allows us to move Alfredo Amezaga back to the infield, perhaps even to play some third, where Jorge Cantu still hasn’t mastered the throw across the diamond.

Update: Robert Andino was sent down.

  • Reconsidering the Marlins Defensive Alignment

  • Hanley RamirezA note in the Miami Herald suggests that the Marlins organization has considered moving Hanley Ramirez to centerfield but, for now, will keep him at shortstop. Hanley has probably committed a few too many errors this year. The team, though, cites Alex Gonzalez as an example of a previous young shortstop who had a few too many errors in his early years but ultimately ended up as a top-notch defensive presence.

I have to admit that sitting through Marlins games recently, I thought quite a bit about where to position players and I suggest that down the road the Marlins consider playing Hanley at third base and moving Miguel Cabrera to first base. This will allow Alfredo Amezaga or Robert Andino to takeover shortstop and provide better defense.

I vote that we save Hanley’s body for the long-term because he is clearly a special talent.
