• Cliff Floyd Named NL Player of the Week

  • Marlins outfielder Cliff Floyd was named the National League Player of the Week for September 25 – October 1, 2000. Floyd led the League with a 1.053 slugging percentage and tied for the League lead with 11 RBI and four doubles, as he helped the Marlins end their season on a season-high six-game winning streak. He was second in the League with a .526 batting average and a .565 on-base percentage and tied for third with 20 total bases. On September 30 against Philadelphia, Floyd went 4×5 with his first career grand slam and six RBI to help the Marlins to an 11-5 win.

  • Baseball Writers Announce Award Winners

  • The South Florida Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) announced their annual Florida Marlins award winners today. The Most Valuable Player is outfielder Preston Wilson (six votes). The Rookie of the Year is pitcher Chuck Smith (eight votes). The Most Improved Marlin is first baseman Derrek Lee (six votes). The “Charlie Hough” Good Guy Award is given to the member of the Marlins who fosters the most positive relations with the media. The winner of this year’s award is Marlins third baseman Mike Lowell (five votes). Nine members of the South Florida Chapter of the BBWAA voted for this year’s awards. The results of the voting were announced by the president of the BBWAA South Florida Chapter David O’Brien.

  • Marlins Announce 2001 Schedule

  • The Florida Marlins will open their ninth season of Major League Baseball on Monday, April 2 at Pro Player Stadium against the Philadelphia Phillies at 4:05 p.m. The 2001 home schedule features visits by the two-time defending World Champion New York Yankees on July 12-14 and visits by all 15 National League Clubs and three American League opponents. The 2001 home schedule is highlighted by nine series against 2000 playoff participants, including three visits each by the 2000 NL East Champion Atlanta Braves and 2000 Wild Card Champion New York Mets. The Marlins will host the Braves on April 6-8, May 21-23 and September 24-26, the New York Mets on May 31-June 3, July 23-25 and September 7-9, the NL Central Champion St. Louis Cardinals on May 1-3 and the NL West Champion San Francisco Giants on May 15-17. The Marlins will play an unbalanced schedule for the first time in Club history, featuring 19 games each against National League East opponents.

  • Dempster Dominates

  • Preston Wilson’s 29th homerun backed up Ryan Dempster’s strong pitching outing to lead the Marlins to a 3-1 victory over the expos. Dempster pitched 8-1/3, striking out 8, allowing only one run in the ninth. Wilson’s homerun gave the Marlins a team-record 151 homeruns for the season. Luis Castillo stole 3 bases, giving him 58, matching Chuck Carr’s single season team record. Antonio Alfonseca retired the final two batters for his 42nd save, 3 shy of the team record.

  • Preston’s Century Leads to a Win

  • Preston Wilson homered twice to lead the Marlins to a 10-1 thrashing of the Arizona Diamonbacks. Wilson’s 4 RBI’s gave him 100 for the season, only the fourth Marlins to reach 100. Ryan Dempster pitched 8 strong innings allowing only an earned run while striking out 9. Derrek Lee’s three hits included a homerun and Mark Kotsay drove in 2 runs on three hits.

  • Lowell Walk’s-Off With a Marlins Win

  • The Marlins rebounded from a 6-3 eighth-inning deficit to defeat the Reds 7-6 on Mike Lowell’s solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Marlins took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a RBI single by Derrek Lee and a sacrifice fly by Mike Redmond. The Reds struck back with four runs in the seventh on a RBI single by Sean Casey and a three-run home run by Dante Bichette. The Marlins tied the game with three in the eighth, as Mark Smith hit a pinch-hit double off the left field wall, Derrek Lee scored on a throwing error by Chris Stynes and Luis Castillo hit a RBI single to score Smith. Marlins starter Ryan Dempster allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 7.0 innings while Dan Miceli earned the win in relief.

  • Kennedy Joins Marlins Broadcast Team

  • The Florida Marlins, in conjunction with SportsRadio 560 WQAM, announced Wednesday Paul Kennedy will join the Marlins radio broadcast team as the pre and post game show host and add play-by-play from September 10 through October 1. Kennedy will replace Jon “Boog” Sciambi, who will serve as a host for Westwood One’s radio coverage of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

  • Rodriguez Drives the Marlins Back to .500

  • Henry Rodriguez drove in four runs on two doubles and a homerun and scored three runs as the Marlins beat the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kevin Brown 11-2. The Marlins used two Dodger errors two score 9 runs in the first two innings. Andy Fox and Mike Lowell also added RBI Doubles. Preston Wilson drove in his team leading 90th RBI, the 6th highest season total for a Marlin. Pinch-hitting in the 8th, Dave Berg hit his first homerun of the season. Jesus Sanchez pitched six strong innings and allowing only two runs in the first. Florida beat Los Angeles for the first time in seven meetings this year.
