Shortstop Alex Gonzalez is recovering from a hairline fracture of his left forearm, which occurred while playing winter ball in Venezuela. Gonzalez returned to the United States and had a cast removed December 6 by Dr. George Caldwell. He will wear a removable splint over the next two weeks while undergoing daily exercises to strengthen his arm and forearm.
The Marlins announced Wednesday they have promoted Lou DePaoli to Vice President of Sales, named Pat McNamara Director of Season and Group Sales and promoted Jim Frevola to Director of Marketing Partnerships.
Rafael Medina was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves. Medina was originally acquired with Derrek Lee in the Kevin Brown trade. He was a starter in the 1998 season before several injuries. Last season, he was frequently called up and sent back down to AAA.

Brent Billingsley was claimed off waivers by the Montreal Expos. The Marlins purchased the contracts of pitchers Scott Comer, Gary Knotts, and Brad Penny and Claudio Vargas, and infielder Pablo Ozuna. That fills up the team’s 40-man roster.
Veteran reliever Dan Miceli was acquired from San Diego for starter Brian Meadows, who led the team in wins each the past two seasons.
Kevin Orie was traded to the Dodgers for a player to be named later. Mike Lowell emerged as the starting third baseman after a sucessful recover from cancer. That made Orie expendable and the Dodgers, fearing a free agency loss of Adrian Beltre, needed a third baseman.
