• Marlins Released Jorge Fabergas

  • The Marlins have released catcher Jorge Fabergas. Jorge struggled offensively but even his great defensive play was not enough. The team was very clear that top-prospect Ramon Castro would be the starting catcher next season. That made the struggling Fabergas, the third highest paid Marlin, expendable. Castro was called up to take Fabergas’ spot on the roster.

  • Julio G. Rebull, Jr. was named Vice President of Sales and Marketing replacing Jim Ross. Rebull joins the Marlins after serving as Senior Vice President for Miami based MasTec, Inc., the largest Hispanic owned company in the United States.

  • Marlis Grand Slam Win After Trailing to Livan

  • Down 0-4 to the Livan Hernandez and the San Francisco Giants, Mike Lowell hit an 8th inning Grand Slam off former Marlin John Johnstone and Dave Berg drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth (of Robb Nen) as the Marlins recorded their 4th consecutive victory, 5-4. Lowell’s Slam was on of 5 this evening, a new Major League Record.

  • The 6 potential sites for the new Marlins ballpark are: Miami River (Dade), Bicentennial Park (Dade), Miramar River (Broward), Davie (Broward), Downtown Fort Lauderdale (Broward), and Lauderhill (Broward).

  • Henry to Reveal Ballpark Plans

  • John Henry will reveal initial plans for a new Marlins ballpark to be built in South Florida. The announcement will occur live on Saturday, August 7th, 1999, 5:00 PM. SportsChannel Florida and WAMI will broadcast live.

  • Only Minor Deal at Trade Deadline

  • Alex Fernandez was not traded at the deadline, instead the team settled on a minor move, acquiring minor league pitcher Mike Drumright from the Detroit Tigers for Brandon Villafuerte. Drumright was assigned to AAA and added to the 40 man roster. Archie Corbin was designated for assignment and Rafael Medina was recalled (for the fourth time) to take Corbin’s spot on the major league roster. Corbin has since been assigned to AAA.
