The Marlins scored 8 runs late, to beat the Pirates 8-7. Preston Wilson continued his assault on the team record book by hitting a pinch hit 2-run home run which gave the Marlins the lead for good. Wilson’s 19th home run, a team rookie record, was also his 3rd pinch hit home run of the season, another team record. Antonio Alfonseca struck out the side in the 9th, his eight save in as many chances this season. The win guaranteed the team its first winning month since the September 1997.

Livan Hernandez, the 1997 World Series MVP was traded to the San Francisco Giants for right-handers Jason Grilli, who will be assigned to AAA Calgary, and Nathan Bump, who will pitch at AA. Vladimir Nunez will take Livan’s spot in the rotation and Hector Almonte was promoted to fill in the bullpen vacancy.
Grilli, 22, 6-4, 185 lbs. right handed pitcher is currently 7-5 with a 5.54 ERA in 19 games this season at AAA Fresno. He was rated by Baseball America as the 44th best prospect in baseball and the best in the Giants organization. He was the Giants’ #1 pick in the 1997 June Amateur Draft out of Seton Hall University where he set school records for strikeouts. Bump, 23, 6-3, 185 lbs. right handed pitcher is currently 4-10 with a 3.31 ERA in 17 starts at AA Shreveport. He was rated by Baseball America as the Giants’ fourth best prospect. He was the Giants’ # 1 pick in the 1998 June Amateur Draft out of Penn State University where he set records for wins, starts, innings, and strikeouts.
