Florida could not capitalize on a good performance by pitcher Dennis Springer, losing to the Phillies 5-2.

The Marlins have signed former Braves outfielder Danny Bautista to a minor league contract.

Brian Meadows pitched 8-1/3 strong innings as the Marlins beat Philadelphia 7-4. Todd Dunwoody drove in 3 runs and Mark Kotsay had 3 hits for the Marlins. Livan Hernandez never had control of his pitches and the Mets lit him up from the begining, beating the Marlins 12-3. The only bright spot for the Marlins was a Preston Wilson 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. The bad news continued as Cliff Floyd will now be out of the line up for 2-4 weeks. Box Score.

Justin Speier, aquired along with Kevin Orie from the Cubs last season, was traded to the Braves for a player to be named later. Speier had an 0-3 record with an 8.38 ERA in 18 games last season.

Marlins hitters and pitchers dominated the Mets 6-2 in front of a sold out Pro Player Stadium. Alex Fernandez threw 95 pitches in 5 innings to earn his first win of the season. The Marlins placed Ryan Jackson on waivers and he was picked up by Seattle. Dennis Springer was named the fifth starter as his contract was purchased by the major league club while A.J. Burnett was sent to AA Portland. Pitcher Brent Billingsley will join AAA Calgary. Pitcher Archie Corbin, catcher John Roskos, and infielder Kevin Millar were sent to the minor league camp. A strong pitching performance from the Atlanta Braves held the Marlins to a 3-2 loss. Mark Kotsay drive in the Marlins’ runs on a 2-run home run. A.J. Burnett allowed three runs in four innings, putting his chances to start with the Major League team in limbo.

Cliff Floyd, who lead the Marlins in home runs, RBI, and set a club record in doubles will start the season on the disabled list due to a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Floyd recently signed a 4 year contract estimated at $19 million. Preston Wilson will finally get a chance to start everyday in left field.
