  • Marlins Sign Jay Gibbons

  • The Marlins have signed Jay Gibbons to a minor league contract. The 31 year old lefty may end up as a good backup at first and in the outfield.

This is a low-risk signing for the Fish with a big upside as Gibbons has been a solid player through out his career. Unfortunately, he was named in the Mitchell Report and teams avioded him last season. With that cloud fading away, Gibbons has something to prove which is always a good motivator. You have to wonder how much impact Gibbons’ former teammate and now Marlins front office employee Jeff Conine had to do with this decision.

  • Latest Ballpark D-Day: January 22, 2009

  • The Marlins are finalizing five agreements with the City and Country and expect all 5 to come up for final vote on January 22.

Five documents still must be agreed upon by commissioners from the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County. The vote is expected on Jan. 22. If all goes according to script, that could be the day the team’s retractable-roof park will become official.

    What are these documents?

The five documents that commissioners will address are: City/parking agreement; operating agreement; construction/administration agreement; non-relocation agreement; and the assurance agreement, where all parties are bound by all agreements.

We also learned that ground breaking is scheduled for sometime between May 15 and June 15th.

  • Niner Joins Marlins’ Front Office

  • Jeff Conine was hired by the Florida Marlins to serve as a Special Assistant to the Team President. Like Andre Dawson and Tony Perez, who also hold this role, Niner will work on-field, in community relations and in the broadcast booth. No word on whether he will get to wear a uniform before games and which number will be on that uniform (18 or 19).
