Where Are They Now: Jason Wood Retires
Jason Wood has retired and will join the Dodgers’ minor league team as a hitting instructor.

The first place Florida Marlins have brought back Wes Helms via a trade with Philadelphia. Helms was designated for assignment by the Phillies and the Marlins traded for him plus cash in exchange for an infamous player to be named later. Helms is making $2.15 million this season and has a $750,000 buyout for 2009.
Here is what the experts are saying:
“Wes was unbelievable in the role for us in 2006, filling in at third, and filling in at first, and being a primary bat off the bench,” Marlins president of baseball operation Larry Beinfest said. “He was a guy that we never wanted to lose in the first place. We’re happy to have him back.”
To make room for Helms, the Marlins designated Jason Wood for assignment. No word if the last place winless Detroit Tigers will try to pick up Wood (just a joke).
The 2008 Florida Marlins roster is now set. Our starting rotation is Mark Hendrickson, Rick VandenHurk, Andrew Miller, and Scott Olsen with Ricky Nolasco likely taking in the fifth slot when it comes up.
Update: Sorry, it’s not completely final. We need confirmation that Jason Wood is also on the team.
Update 2: If Jeremy Hermida ends up on the DL, Alexis Gomez will take his spot on the roster.

Joe Frisaro is reporting that there are grumblings in the clubhouse that Jose Castillo will not make the team.
It’s clear that Jorge Cantu had a great Spring and Dallas McPherson is injured. I’m wondering whether the Fish think Cantu and Alfredo Amezaga will play 3rd and then have Jason Wood backup first. Regardless it’s a bit surprising.
Update: The Marlins just placed him on waivers; we will have to wait and see if someone picks him up; for now he’s still with the team.
Spring Training is just around the corner and the Marlins have released the names of the new (and old) faces who will join the club for its annual spring rituals.
We have already heard about Jose Castillo and Jorge Cantu but now we learn that 13 minor league free agents received invites to the big league camp and they are: pitchers Doug Waechter, Bobby Keppel and Tim Corcoran; catcher Paul Hoover; infielders Tagg Bozied and Jason Wood; and outfielders John Gall, Alexis Gomez and Jorge Piedra.
Other non-40-man-roster invitees include pitchers Burke Badenhop, Dallas Trahern, Gaby Hernandez, Brett Sinkbeil, Aaron Thompson, Ryan Tucker and Chris Volstad; catchers John Baker, Brett Hayes and Brad Davis; and infielders Chris Coghlan and Lee Mitchell.
The Marlins began their first purge of bench players / guys-with-potential-who-couldn’t-cut-it / oops with a series of transactions:
Huh? Why did we lose Jose Garcia? Why would we sit on him for a year as he recovers from surgery only to lose him?
I’m guessing the Fish tried to sneak him through but the smart guys at Oakland didn’t miss a beat. As for Reginald Damascus Abercrombie, I can’t say much because like everyone else I liked his talent but frankly he was constantly given opportunities and never delivered. Maybe a change of scenery will help. BTW, you think we could have packaged those two in a trade for a veteran pitcher? Anyway.
