It’s now clear that the Marlins will focus on trading Mike Jacobs, Scott Olsen and Kevin Gregg. In fact, one trade almost happened:
The Marlins, who had a $22 million payroll in 2008, wanted to deal Jacobs to Kansas City, but the deal died last week because of a medical issue involving the minor-league pitcher that Florida would have received. The Marlins also spoke to Toronto and San Francisco about Jacobs.
As for Dan Uggla, it looks like the Fish will keep him:
”They haven’t put Uggla out there” — though several teams inquired. The Marlins have decided they value Uggla’s power and run production and it ”will take an insanely high offer” to move him, one official said.
Gaby Sanchez will probably get a chance to win the first base job in the spring but if he falters, expect Jorge Cantu at first and Dallas McPherson at third.
Also, on other front:
One official said the Marlins are still mulling whether to trade or keep Jeremy Hermida and/or Josh Willingham (both arbitration-eligible), but Beinfest wouldn’t discuss that. ”There is still a lot of upside to Hermida,” Beinfest said. ”Willingham, hopefully his back will be healthy.” Several teams inquired about Hermida. Beinfest — speaking in general — said there has been “a lot of interest in our players.”
With Hermida’s underwhelming performance and Willingham’s back, you have to wonder if anyone will offer anything meaningful for either one.
For all the ups and downs of the 2008 season, the Florida Marlins posted a record of 84-77, the third best record in franchise history. The team posted incredible offensive numbers lead by the historic home run power from all four of the starting infielders. As we start looking forward to a busy off-season and hopefully a successful 2009, here are some thoughts, observations, and links: More
Home runs by Mike Jacobs and Luis Gonzalez combined with Mark Hendrickson making it to the 6th inning, and the Marlins go to 9-5 and keep a 1.5 game lead in the National League East.
I wasn’t able to pick it all up, but Mike Jacobs announced the lineup for FSN today used the following nicknames:
The Fish set a new club record hitting 6 home runs in a 10-6 win over the Houston Astros. Red-hot Jeremy Hermida hit two while the other home runs were hit by league leader Mike Jacobs, Mike Rabelo in his Marlins debut, Jorge Cantu who literally hit it out of the park and Hanley Ramirez. Ricky Nolasco looked shaky but managed to complete 5 innings and earn the win.
The 2008 Florida Marlins roster is now set. Our starting rotation is Mark Hendrickson, Rick VandenHurk, Andrew Miller, and Scott Olsen with Ricky Nolasco likely taking in the fifth slot when it comes up.
Update: Sorry, it’s not completely final. We need confirmation that Jason Wood is also on the team.
Update 2: If Jeremy Hermida ends up on the DL, Alexis Gomez will take his spot on the roster.

MLBTR speculates that the Marlins are looking to trade for another starter. We know Sergio Mitre is out and Scott Olsen is slow to recover but is it worth trading away Mike Jacobs or some younger talent to get one of these guys?
potentially available starters include Kyle Snyder, Kei Igawa, Dave Bush, Claudio Vargas, Jason Marquis, Daniel Cabrera, Matt Morris, Woody Williams, Matt Belisle, Justin Germano, Anthony Reyes, Cliff Lee, Jeremy Sowers, Aaron Laffey, and Gustavo Chacin.
BTW, I don’t buy the salary argument. If the Fish found a meaningful starter who has a multi-million dollar salary, I’m sure ownership would make it’s infamous one-player salary splurge.
The New York Mets continue stacking their team with former Marlins and this time they have Mr. Marlin himself Jeff Conine.
The Mets picked him up from the Reds in exchange for a couple of minor leaguers. I laugh when I hear that because I think of all the great minor league talent we’ve picked up from the Mets over the years, including A.J. Burnett, Preston Wilson, Matt Lindstrom, Henry Owens, Mike Jacobs and Gabby Hernandez to name a few. Not that he’s to blame for all these trades, but maybe one day someone in baseball will wake up and admit that Omar Minaya is not that good of a GM (unless you have an open check book and great talent to give away).
Anyway, back to Niner, the Mets needed him, ironically, after former Marlin Damion Easley sprained his ankle.
