• Selig Approves Marlins – Blue Jays Megatrade

  • Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig issued the following statement today regarding the trade between the Miami Marlins and the Toronto Blue Jays:

“Since Tuesday, I have carefully reviewed the proposed transaction between the Miami Marlins and the Toronto Blue Jays. I asked our Baseball Operations Department and our Labor Relations Department to compare this proposed transaction with similar deals. I also consulted with experienced baseball operations executives to get their input regarding the talent involved in this transaction.

“After a thorough examination of this information, it is my conclusion that this transaction, involving established Major Leaguers and highly regarded young players and prospects, represents the exercise of plausible baseball judgment on the part of both Clubs, does not violate any express rule of Major League Baseball and does not otherwise warrant the exercise of any of my powers to prevent its completion. It is, of course, up to the Clubs involved to make the case to their respective fans that this transaction makes sense and enhances the competitive position of each, now or in the future.

“I am sensitive to the concerns of the fans of Miami regarding this trade, and I understand the reactions I have heard since Tuesday. Baseball is a social institution with important social responsibilities and I fully understand that the Miami community has done its part to put the Marlins into a position to succeed with beautiful new Marlins Park. Going forward, I will continue to monitor this situation with the expectation that the Marlins will take into account the sentiments of their fans, who deserve the best efforts and considered judgment of their Club. I have received assurances from the ownership of the Marlins that they share these beliefs and are fully committed to build a long-term winning team that their fans can be proud of.”

  • Marlins Bring Back Juan Pierre

  • The Marlins have signed Juan Pierre to a 1-year $1.6 million deal. Pierre, one of the main catalysts for the Marlins 2003 championship team, will likely play LF for the Marlins and provide speed at the top of the lineup. JP will turn 36 in August but is coming off a nice season with the Phillies where he batted 307 and stole 37 bases.

  • Firesale! Marlins Trade Buehrle, Johnson, Reyes, Buck and Bonifacio

  • In an unprecedented 12-player trade, the Marlins Sent Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle and Emilio Bonifactio along with $8,000,000 to the Toronto Blue Jays for shortstop Yunel Escobar, right-hander Henderson Alvarez, catcher Jeff Mathis and prospects Jake Marisnick (OF), Adeiny Hechavarria (SS), Justin Nicolino (LHP) and Anthony DeSclafani (RHP).

With this trade the Marlins dumped most of their salary commitments, reducing their payroll to under $20,000,000. While the Marlins managed to get some of the best prospects out of Toronto’s highly-respected farm system, they have opened up more holes in their lineup and rotation going into next season. With Nolasco and possible Morrison on the trade block, it’s not clear what the new core of this team will look like.

  • @Deadspin: Fuck the Marlins

  • @Deadspin: Fuck the Marlins.

Here is what has happened in the last year of the Miami Marlins, formerly d/b/a Florida Marlins: They swindled the citizens of Miami for a new stadium and drew the SEC’s notice. They filched Jose Reyes from a franchise that has actual fans but no money and a municipal government that refuses to be robbed blind. They threw money at Heath Bell, Mark Buehrle, and Albert Pujols, and two of the three took it. They got fish installed behind home plate. Their president called Miamians stupid. They installed a wack-ass home run sculpture. Their snobbish owner blabbed about Joan Miro. Their owner then trotted out a shaking Muhammad Ali to shield him from boos on opening night. Their owner then baked himself a fucking cake with jewels on it. Ozzie Guillen, whom they honest-to-god hired to manage their baseball team, said some crazy shit about Fidel Castro, which he does, from time to time. The Marlins then suspended him to placate area Cubans. The mollified Cubans still had no interest in going to see the Marlins, because they are the fucking Marlins. The team stank out of the gate, especially Heath Bell. They complained about not having any All-Stars. Showtime canceled its series about them because they sucked so much. John Buck flipped you off. Heath Bell and Ozzie Guillen got in a pissing match. No one came to the games. The extant fans were hilariously pissed off. The team ate $8 million to dump Heath Bell. They ate less to dump Ozzie Guillen. They replaced Ozzie with a guy who spends his leisure time naked. Then they traded Reyes, Josh Johnson, Emilio Bonifacio, Buck, and Buehrle to the Blue Jays. Giancarlo Stanton, their only remaining player of note, a young dynamo who deserves far better, says he’s pissed off. He should be. Fuck the Marlins.

  • Jose Reyes Sleeps on a Giant Pile of Money

  • The world famous Marlins boy band blogger @BoobiesNStanton once said, when reading a tweet suggesting Jose Reyes regrets signing with the Fish:

Turns out, that’s not far from the truth.

If you followed Reyes’s Instagram account this season, you probably noticed the expensive cars, clothing and jewelry that Reyes not only owns but continues to show off to his many followers. Jose Reyes is living it large and he wants the whole world to see it. It’s the real life of the 1-percenters or a prologue to “Broke” just waiting to happen.

Jose is currently visiting Dubai (staying at the Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa, of course) but you can follow his rich lifestyle on his Instagram account: LaMelaza7

  • Mike Redmond Named Marlins Manager

  • The Miami Marlins have named Mike Redmond as the team’s new manager.

Redmond, who spend 12 years in the majors, including 7 years with the Marlins (1998-2004), agreed to a 3-year contract and will be introduced at Marlins Park on Friday at 1:30 PM.

Redmond appeared to be the favorite going into the managerial search process with the Marlins rumored to be focusing on former players with limited Managerial experience. Jeff Conine, Mike Lowell and Brad Ausmus were not interested in the job and Luis Gonzalez was interviewed. The Marlins also looked at Lloyd Mclendon, Bryan Price and Larry Bowa.

So far, sources have confirmed that Perry Hill will join Redmond’s coaching staff. Juan C. Rodriguez ‏is reporting that Reid Cornelius, currently the Marlins bullpen coach, will take over as pitching coach.

The news was first reported by CBS’s John Heyman:
