• Baseball With Boog To Debut on WQAM

  • Baseball with Boog, hosted by Marlins radio broadcaster Jon “Boog” Sciambi, will make its weekly debut on the Marlins flagship station 560 WQAM on Thursday, September 13 with a special three-hour broadcast from 7-10 p.m. Marlins Special Assistant to the General Manager and Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee Tony Perez will be a special guest on the broadcast.

  • Perez Joins the Hall of Fame

  • Tony Perez, the Marlins Special Assistant to the General Manager was elected today to the Baseball Hall of Fame for his career with the Cincinatti Reds. As a member of the Big Red Machine, Perez hit 379 home runs and had 1,652 RBIs. He is the first Cuban and fifth Latin American player to join the Hall.

  • Marlins Begin Youth Clinics

  • The Florida Marlins will begin a year-long series of youth baseball clinics on Saturday, January 8, giving the youth of South Florida an opportunity to receive fun, hands-on instruction from Marlins players and coaches. Each of the clinics will feature instruction from Marlins Infield Coach Tony Taylor, a 19-year Major League veteran, a Marlins player and other members of the Marlins coaching staff.

  • Marlins Invite 17 to Spring Training

  • The Florida Marlins announced Thursday they have invited 17 non-roster players to their eighth annual Spring Training camp and the second under Manager John Boles. The Marlins have invited six pitchers to camp, including righthanders Jason Grilli, Bronswell Patrick, Ricky Bones, Claudio Vargas, Gary Knotts and left-hander Scott Comer. The Marlins have invited four infielders, including Sean McNally, Chris Clapinski, Joe Funaro and Mendy Lopez. Five catchers were extended invites, including Sandy Martinez, Ryan Robertson, Chris Tremie, Brandon Harper and Matt Treanor. Two outfielders, Mark Smith and Jaime Jones, were also invited.

  • Andre Dawson Named Special Assistant

  • The Florida Marlins announced Wednesday they have hired Andre Dawson as Special Assistant to the General Manager. Dawson’s responsibilities will include on-field work while the Marlins are at home, assisting manager John Boles and the Florida coaching staff. While the Marlins are on the road, Dawson will be involved with the club’s activities in the community, conducting baseball clinics and representing the club in various events. Dawson will also assist the general manager by participating in baseball and organizational meetings.

  • Marlins Sign Ricky Bones

  • The Marlins signed free agent right-handed pitcher Ricky Bones to a AAA contract and invited him to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee. The 30-year old Bones struggled with Baltimore last season. He was an All-Star in 1994.

  • Comer, Knotts, and Vargas removed from 40-man roster

  • The Florida Marlins announced Tuesday they have non-tendered the contracts left-handed pitcher Scott Comer, right-handed pitcher Gary Knotts and right-handed pitcher Claudio Vargas, thus removing them from the 40-man roster. The club has signed the pitchers to AAA contracts and invited them to Spring Training as non-roster invitees.

  • Marlins Re-sign Bautista

  • The Florida Marlins announced Tuesday they have signed outfielder Danny Bautista to a one-year contract with a club option for the 2001 season. Bautista will be paid $500,000 with the opportunity to earn $100,000 more in incentives. The club has an option for the 2001 season for $575,000 with a $25,000 buyout.

  • Arizona Wants A. Nunez Back

  • The Arizona Diamonbacks have filed a grievance to get Abraham Nunez back from the Marlins. He was recently acquired by the Marlins to complete the Mantei trade. The original list of players to be considered by the Marlins also included pitchers Stephen Randolph and Jason Boyd. But Boyd was traded to Pittsburgh and Randolph missed six weeks of last season with an arm injury. A previous grievance was already denied.
