• Are the Fish Going After Aroldis Chapman?

  • MLBTradeRumors is reporting that the Marlins are a surprise entrant in the chase for the young Cuban left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman.

MLBTR has learned of a surprising suitor for free agent lefty Aroldis Chapman: the Marlins. They intend to submit an offer and hope to meet Chapman this month. Offers began rolling in for Chapman last week.

Chapman is only 21 and is looking for a major upfront signing bonus which is not something the Marlins like to do. That being said, he is as good as signing the first pick in the draft and could be a great long-term investment. Chapman could also serve as a marketing tool to drive more Cuban-Americans to Marlins game, just a few seasons before the Fish move to Little Havana. My guess, the Yankees, Red Sox or Dodgers overpay despite a strong push by the Marlins.

  • Marlins Fill Coaching Vacancies

  • The Marlins filled their remaining coaching vacancies by hiring Dave Collins as the new third base coach, Josue Espada as first base coach and former Marlins’ pitcher Reid Cornelius as bullpen coach. In somewhat related news, former Fish 3rd base coach Bo Porter has taken that position with the Arizona where he is expected to waive in many Diamondbacks to be thrown out at the plate.

Update: BTW, looks like Bo Porter was actually a finalist for the Washington Nationals managerial job.

  • Hermida Shipped Out to Boston

  • The Marlins have traded Jeremy Hermida to the Boston Red Sox for left-handed pitchers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez.

Hermida was never able to live up to high expectations batting .259 last season with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs. Now that he is in Boston, the Yankees/Red Sox obsessed national baseball media will fawn over his talent and potential. For Hermida’s sake, we hope the change of scenery will help.
