• Fernandez Out

  • Alex Fernandez has a torn rotator cuff. The injury had occurred prior to game 2 and doctors still cannot understand how he was able to pitch (2-2/3 innings, 5 earned runs). He might be out the all of next season (an possibly, his career might be over). The Marlins not only lose their second best pitcher, but bullpen depth, as Livan Hernandez will start game 6. The Marlins will still have to protect Fernandez in the expansion draft because of a no-trade clause in his contract.

  • 1997 NLCS Game 2: Braves 7 – Marlins 1 (W: Glavine, L: Fernandez)

  • Tom Glavine pitched 7-2/3 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits to lead the Braves to a 7-1 dumping of the Marlins. Chipper Jones hit a home run, singled 3 times, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Kurt Abbott had two hits for the Marlins and Devon white had the other hit, and only RBI, for the Marlins.

Alex Fernandez struggled allowing 5 runs in 2-2/3 innings. It was later discovered that Fernandez pitched with a torn rotator cuff. While the loss was disappointing, the Marlins were able to pull out a split in Atlanta, with 3 games at home this weekend. Moises Alou did not play with injuries to his wrist and shoulder. It is unknown if he will be available for Friday’s game. Charles Johnson committed his first error of the year (playoffs don’t count against his Major League record).
