• Lowell Wins Conigliaro Award

  • Florida Marlins infielder Mike Lowell has been named the 10th winner of the Tony Conigliaro Award, given annually to a Major League player who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage. Conigliaro’s brothers, Billy and Richie, will make the official presentation of the award to Lowell on January 13, 2000 at the Boston Baseball Writers’ annual dinner.

  • Reshuffling in the Scouting Department

  • The Marlins announced Monday several changes in the areas of Professional and Amateur Scouting. In the area of professional scouting, Scott Reid was promoted to Assistant to the General Manager and Jax Robertson, Dick Egan and Manny Estrada were named Major League Scouts. In the area of amateur scouting, Murray Cook was promoted to National Crosschecker, Mike Russell was promoted to Eastern Region Crosschecker, Larry Keller was promoted to Area Scout for Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and Douglas Rogalski was named Area Scout for Central and North Florida, as well as parts of South Georgia.

  • Camp Acquired in Rule V Draft

  • The Florida Marlins announced Monday they have acquired right-handed pitcher Jared Camp from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for right-handed pitcher Johan Santana and cash consideration in a trade made at the completion of the Major League phase of the 1999 Rule V Draft. Camp was the first player selected in the draft, as the Twins drafted the righthander from the Cleveland Indians. The Marlins selected Santana from the Houston Astros with the second pick in the draft. Camp will remain on the team’s 40-man roster.

  • Phoenix Acquired in AAA Draft

  • The Florida Marlins announced Monday they have selected outfielder Wynter Phoenix from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the AAA phase of the 1999 Rule V Draft. The Marlins also announced that left-handed pitcher Gabe Gonzalez was selected by the Montreal Expos in the AAA draft, while right-handed pitcher Aaron Cames was chosen by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the AAA phase of the draft.

  • Brant Brown Acquired for Aven

  • Bruce Aven was traded to Pittsburgh for outfielder Brant Brown. Brown will mostly pinch hit and play the outfield, but might also start at first, should Derrek Lee struggle. Brown will provide a much needed left handed hitter of the bench. The trade ends all the speculation over any chance of bringing back Jeff Conine, who will accept a lucrative deal with Baltimore.
