• We’re launching our first poll (it’s our first poll so if it’s broken, please be patient with us). Today’s poll is a pretty basic one: what was the best trade in Marlins history?

We’ve looked back at many trades and picked the following as our finalists. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to mention them in the comments. Maybe we’ll add it to the poll.

    • July 17, 1993: Robb Nen and Kurt Miller from the Texas Rangers for Cris Carpenter
Marlins get their closer and a key member of the 1997 World Series team. Initially a starter, Nen was moved to closer and ends up being one of the greatest ever.
    • July 8, 1999: Brad Penny, Vladimir Nunez and Abraham Nunez from the Arizona Diamondbacks for Matt Mantei
Dave Dombrowski ships an often-injured over-hyped closer and manages to get one of the winningest pitchers in franchise history and a couple of Nunez who filled some gaps during some lean years.
    • March 27, 2002: Dontrelle Willis, Jose Cueto, Ryan Jorgensen and Julian Tavarez from the Chicago Cubs for Antonio Alfonseca and Matt Clement
Fans and the media ripped the Loria Administration for this trade, pulled off during spring training and viewed as a money-saving move. But we all know how valuable Dontrelle is today.
    • November 24, 2005: Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Harvey Garcia and Jesus Delgado from the Boston Red Sox for Mike Lowell, Josh Beckett and Guillermo Mota
We went back and forth on this one because it was a huge money-dump where the Marlins gave up their best pitcher and World Series MVP along with a solid veteran third baseman. But, Hanley is looking more and more like a superstar and Anibal showed us a glimmer of greatness and a no-hitter.
    • December 7, 2005: Sergio Mitre, Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto for Juan Pierre
This one was a no brainer. The Cubs give up more great pitchers in exchange for JP who had struggled after a great 2003 season. The Marlins get two very promising starters in Mitre and Ricky Nolasco and even manage to get Pinto who takes up some space in the bullpen.

    POLL IS NOW CLOSED
