• The Hanley Ramirez Era is Over

  • Sources are reporting that the Marlins have traded Hanley Ramirez with Randy Choate to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor leaguers Nathan Eovaldi and Scott McGough.

Once considered the franchise, Ramirez has put up sub-par numbers over the past season and a half and all but lost the appreciation and patience of his teammates. For the Marlins, it signifies a change of an era that began in 2006 with the likes of Ramirez, Uggla, Sanchez, Nolasco and Johnson. Additionally, Ramirez was due $31.5 million over the next two season, far more than his performance deserved.

Hanley leaves as a 3-time All-Star, 2006 Rookie of the Year, and 2009 batting champ.

  • Marlins Trade Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to the Tigers

  • The Marlins are now sellers.

Just an hour before today’s game, the Marlins trade Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez to the Detroit Tigers for RHP Jacob Turner, C Bob Brantly, LHP Brian Flynn, and an exchange in compensation draft picks. Sanchez was to become a free agent at the end of the season while Infante was signed through 2013.

Turner, who just earned his first Major League win is considered one of the top prospects in baseball. Brantly is also highly touted and provides the Marlins with organizational depth at catcher.

  • Marlins Acquire Carlos Lee

  • Seeking a productive bat in the lineup, the Marlins have acquired Carlos Lee from the Houston Astros for Matt Dominguez and Rob Rasmussen. Lee will take over 1B from Gaby Sanchez, who is likely headed to the minors. The Marlins didn’t seem to pay a significant cost for Lee as Dominguez was never able to get his hitting going at the Major League level and Houston may be on the hook for some or all of Lee’s remaining 2012 salary.

  • Dontrelle Willis Retires

  • Dontrelle Willis, former Rookie of the Year, two-time All Star and World Champion with the 2003 Marlins, has retired at the age of 30. D-Train will always be remembered as one of the best and most energetic players to ever wear a Marlins uniform.

I took the photo above back in 2005 at RFK Stadium as Willis was closing out the Washington Nationals to win his 20th game of the season. He ended that season with a league-leading 22 wins and finished 2nd in the NL Cy Young Award).
