• Marlins Acquire Jeff Abbott for Julio Ramirez

  • The Florida Marlins have acquired outfielder Jeff Abbott from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for outfielder Julio Ramirez. “Jeff Abbott gives us a solid extra outfielder who can play all three outfield positions,” Dave Dombrowski said. “He strengthens the depth of our Club and is someone who played with a Division Champion last year.” Abbott, a 6-2, 200 lb outfielder, hit .274 (59×215) with three home runs and 29 RBI in 80 games with Chicago in 2000. The versatile outfielder played in 33 games in centerfield, 20 games in leftfield, 16 games in right and seven games as a designated hitter in 2000. The 28-year-old native of Atlanta, Georgia has a .264 (146×554) lifetime average with 18 home runs and 78 RBI in four Major League seasons with Chicago.

  • The Florida Marlins have named Chris Chambliss manager of the AAA Calgary Cannons. “The Florida Marlins are extremely excited to have Chris Chambliss join our organization as our Triple-A manager,” said Williams. ” We are adding a class individual and a quality baseball man with solid leadership skills and championship background.” Chambliss spent the last five seasons as the hitting coach for the New York Yankees, claiming four World Championships during that span.

  • The Florida Marlins have been selected to participate in the 55th Annual Hall of Fame Game on August 6, 2001, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced today. The Marlins will face the Milwaukee Brewers at 2 p.m. at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York.

  • Marlins Conclude a Successful Season with 6 Straight Wins

  • The Marlins finished the 2000 Season with a 6-game winning streak and an overal record of 79-82. The 2000 season was the third best in team history following the 1997 (92-70) and the 1996 season (80-82). The 15-win improvement from last season combined with the previous 10-win improvement made the Marlins the first team in 60 years to post back-to-back seasons with a 10+ win improvement. Preston Wilson was the Major League’s only 30-30 man and broke the team record with 121 RBIs. Three other Marlins hit more than 20 homeruns as the Marlins set a new team record for homeruns in a season. Luis Castillo broke a team record with a league leading 62 stolen bases. Antonio Alfonseca won the National League Rolaids Relief Award with a Major League leading 45 saves. That total tied Bryan Harvey’s team record from 1993.

  • The Florida Marlins announced Tuesday right-handed pitcher Alex Fernandez and left-handed pitcher Michael Tejera have been reinstated from the emergency disabled list. The Marlins also announced they have paid financial considerations to the Houston Astros to complete the April 11 trade that sent catcher Paul Bako to the Marlins.

  • Edmondson Opts For Free Agency

  • Right-handed reliever Brian Edmondson has elected to exercise his right of free agency. Edmondson, 27, was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and outrighted to AAA Calgary on October 5. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a torn labrum in his right shoulder on April 2 and underwent successful reconstructive surgery to repair the shoulder on April 5. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 12. In two Major League seasons with Atlanta and Florida, Edmondson is 9-12 with a 4.98 ERA in 121 games. He went 5-8 with a 5.84 ERA with Florida in 1999.
